Sudan denies US accusation of obstructing aid delivery

Sudan’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that US claims that the Sudanese army had obstructed humanitarian aid to civilians were “false accusations.”

“The ministry of foreign affairs of the Republic of the Sudan expresses its astonishment and rejection of the false accusations included in the statement issued by the US State Department yesterday, Friday, February 23, 2024, against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the government of Sudan, with respect to humanitarian assistance and civilian activities,” it said.

“The statement fails to condemn the terrorist RSF [Rapid Support Forces] militia explicitly  and exclusively for its direct responsibility of crimes of genocide, ethnic cleansing, sexual violence and crimes against humanity in Sudan, as determined by the US administration and legislature themselves,” it added.

It came after the US condemned what it said was the obstruction of humanitarian aid access in Sudan and called on the country’s warring sides to allow unhindered deliveries to all parts of the war-wracked nation.

According to the United Nations, about 13,900 people have died and 8.1 million displaced in the conflict in Sudan, which broke out nearly a year ago.

The country is facing one of the fastest unfolding crises globally, says the UN, with about 25 million of its people needing humanitarian assistance and support.
