Somaliland announces date for this year’s presidential poll

The Somaliland National Electoral Commission (SLNEC) announced on Saturday, April 20, that it would hold a presidential election on November 13 and that it was “diligently” prepared to conduct the exercise.

“Today, [SLNEC] announced the schedule for the joint presidential and political parties elections, set for November 13, 2024,” it said.

The election was initially set to take place in November 2022 but was delayed and president Musa Bihi Abdi’s term extended by two years by parliament because of political disputes.

“As the scheduled election date approaches, [SLNEC] calls upon all stakeholders, including political parties, political associations, civil society organisations, media and the international community, to actively participate in promoting civic engagement and ensuring a peaceful and inclusive environment,” the electoral commission said in a statement.

Somaliland declared its secession from the rest of Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the country’s central government but is not recognized internationally.
