Somaliland accuses the BBC of waging ‘propaganda campaign’ against it

Somaliland’s information minister on Friday accused the Somali service of the British public broadcaster BBC of waging a propaganda campaign against the self-proclaimed republic but offered no specifics.

“The propaganda campaign against the Republic of Somaliland and its people by the BBC Somali is not something that can be tolerated in any way,” Ali Hassan Mohamed said on X.

“We have sent a series of complaints to the head of the BBC Somali, attached with evidence, warning them to stop the debates and exaggerated false news against Somaliland,” he added.

“But instead of doing something about it, they choose to opt for the complete reverse and by further accelerating the defamation of Somaliland.”

The minister did not provide details about the alleged campaign against Somaliland.

The BBC has not responded to the accusation publicly.

Somaliland has a fractious relationship with BBC Somali, which has reporters in the territory.

In 2022, it suspended the service’s programming over accusations of abandoning impartiality and “undermining the credibility of the Somaliland state”.

The suspension was later lifted.
