Somalia says say fire at Mogadishu market caused by bomb blast

A fire at the main market in Mogadishu on Sunday that killed at least one person was caused by a bomb explosion, Somali media said, citing police.

It was the second bomb attack at the Bakaaraha market over the past few weeks.

Security officials said an improvised explosive device was left near the market, exploding and hitting several shops.

Police spokesperson Kasim Ahmed told journalists that the fire “was caused by an explosive device planted by the terrorists in a garbage dump”, the official news agency SONNA posted on X.

No group has said it was behind the blast but Al Shabaab has carried out attacks in Mogadishu in the past.

SONNA also reported a “a successful operation” in Mogadishu in which it said police seized “140 mortars from terrorists who launched two attacks last night”.
