Somali troops and partners kill dozens of Al Shabaab fighters in operations: Reports

Somalia’s army, backed by foreign partners, has killed 30 Al Shabaab insurgents in operations aimed at weakening the group, state-affiliated media outlets said on Saturday.

The operations took place in the Jilib-Marka area in Lower Shabelle region early on Saturday, targeting an Al Shabaab gathering, the reports added.

The joint forces also seized weapons and ammunition from the group, the government-funded news agency SONNA reported.

Government official Maslah Moalim was cited as saying that the casualties included unnamed Al Shabaab leaders.

The insurgent group holds areas in Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.

Govermment forces backed by foreign troops are conducting operations against the group in a bid to weaken and ultimately defeat it.

The operations have seen significant progress in recent years, with Al Shabaab losing control of many areas in the south and centre of the country.
