A second ship carrying 25,000 tons of wheat, donated by Russia to Somalia as humanitarian aid, has docked at Mogadishu’s sea port, Somali state media and an official said today.
The head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mahamuud Moallim, said on X that he received the aid on the morning of Wednesday, January 24.
“I received a shipment of … wheat from the government of Russia. I want to express my sincere appreciation for the invaluable support provided by the Russian government,” he said on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Somali state television SNTV cited Mahamuud as saying that the aid will be distributed soon to needy people and those affected by recent heavy rains across Somalia.
According to SNTV, the shipment was the second of its kind to arrive in Somalia recently.
In November 2023, Somalia received 25,000 tons of grain as humanitarian aid from Russia, with the ship carrying the food also arriving at Mogadishu’s sea port.
The aid was promised by President Vladimir Putin at a summit with African leaders in Russia in July 2023.
