Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday (November 12) met his Eritrean countepart Isaias Afwerki in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss ties between their two countries, Eritrea’s information minister said.
Yemane G. Meskel said on X, the social media platform formely called Twitter, that “the two leaders re-affirmed readiness to elevate bilateral historical bonds… to new heights”.
They also agreed to “coordinate their efforts for regional stability and security of Red Sea,” he added.
Their meeting followed a Saudi-African economic summit in Riyadh on November 10.
President Mohamud also attended an Islamic summit hosted by Saudi Arabia to call for an end to Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
Somali goverment media said Mohamud met several leaders on the sidelines of that summit, including Iraq’s president Abdul Latif Rashid and Djiboutian head of state Ismail Omar Guelleh.
The Somali leader said “what is happening in Gaza contradicts all norms, laws and human values”.
“Today, our people are watching us and are expecting us to stop the killing of the Palestinian children,” he added.
