Google says Gmail ‘here to stay’ after sunsetting claims

Google said on Friday that Gmail “is here to stay” after a viral post on X claimed that the company is “sunsetting” the popular email service.

“Gmail is here to stay,” Google assured in a one-line post on X.

It came after what appeared to be a screenshot from an official Google announcement had gone viral on X before being flagged by users as fake.

“We are reaching out to share an important update about Gmail. After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close,” the viral post said.

“As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service. This means that as of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” it read.

According to DemandSage, Gmail has over 1.8 billion active users.
