Ethiopian telecoms operator Ethio Telecom has launched fifth-generation (5G) mobile services in Jigjiga, the capital of the country’s Somali Regional State.
“Our company has officially launched 5G mobile service in Jigjiga, offering unparalleled and seamless connectivity for our valued customers!” the company said today in a post on X.
“With pride, we offer the world’s fastest mobile network service, 5G, poised to revolutionize our society’s lifestyle and enhance business ventures in this vibrant eastern city, Jigjiga,” it added.
Ethio Telecom’s main competitor is a consortium led by Kenya’s Safaricom, which started operations in Ethiopia in October last year.
The state-owned operator similarly launched 5G services in the federal capital Addis Ababa last year, providing data speeds at least 20 times faster than 4G.
There were 21.1 million internet users in Ethiopia as of December 2021, 17.7% of the population, according to Internet World Stats.
