Burkina Faso says about 170 villagers killed in northern villages

Unidentified attackers killed about 170 people   in northern Burkina Faso in late February, the French news agency AFP reported on Sunday, citing a statement by a regional public prosecutor.

The prosecutor, Aly Benjamin Coulibaly, said the attacks took place in the villages of Komsilga, Nodin and Soroe in Yatenga province on February 25.

He put the provisional death toll at “around 170 people executed”.

Coulibaly said his office was investigating the killings.

The violence happened on the same day dozens of Muslims and Christians were reportedly killed in mosque and church attacks in eastern and northern Burkina Faso.

It was not clear which groups were behind the wave of attacks in the country, which is grappling with violent insurgencies.
