Ex-president of Somalia returns home amid plans to amend constitution

Former Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo returned to Mogadishu on Friday from an unspecified country amid a controversy over planned changes to Somalia’s provisional constitution.

“I returned to the capital Mogadishu today to continue efforts towards strenghtening the unity of our country. It is incumbent upon us to unite at this critical moment and set side our political differences,” Farmajo said on X.

The former president, a life member of the country’s federal parliament, has been mostly living outside Somalia since he lost the presidency to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in 2022.

In January, he called on Mohamud to consult with political stakeholders before amending the provisionl constitution, which the country adopted in 2012.

The country’s parliament is yet to present the reviewed constitutional text to the Somali people for final approval by referendum as was previously agreed.
